Let’s be honest – it’s hard to follow through with your New Year’s Resolution – especially when you’re still in the midst of a pandemic! And if you struggle to stick with your commitment, know you’re not alone: 80% of people don’t follow through with their New Year’s Resolutions. No wonder there’s so many memes out there!

You might wonder if there’s any hope in accomplishing the goals you set in the New Year or maybe you’re struggling to decide if it’s worth setting any goals at all.

How about considering a different approach this year?

David Novak doesn’t make annual New Year’s Resolutions. Instead, he answers two simple questions on a 3×5 card at the beginning of each year:

1. Who am I today?
2. How can I be even better tomorrow?

David learned this exercise from an image consultant named Jack Byrum when he was 27 years old and he’s been doing it every year since.

The 3×5 card exercise inspires David to take his self-awareness to the next level and helps him focus on where he wants to go next. Through this exercise, he learned how to move from being very passionate with strong courage in his convictions (which can intimidate those who work for him) to taking time to encourage different points of view so he gets the best ideas on the table.

This year, why not give the 3×5 Exercise a shot? Take some time to reflect on who you are today and who you want to become in 2021. Be honest about your strengths and growth opportunities. You might even want to invite a few trusted friends or colleagues to share their answers to these two questions so you have a more balanced perspective. Once you have your answers, this becomes your True North for 2021. Use your 3×5 card to inspire and guide you all year long.
